No - Yeast Bread Sticks

Soft bread-sticks are easy to make. They make a nice addition to a soup, stew, or salad. Recipe adapted from internet.

1 1/4 cups flour
2 tsp sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2/3cup milk
3 Tbsp butter or margarine, melted
 Mozzarella cheese (optional)

Combine dry ingredients and gradually add milk to form a soft dough. Knead gently 3 or 4 times on a floured surface. Roll out into a rectangle and cut into 12 sticks.
Put the melted butter into a large baking dish, and turn the bread-sticks to coat them with the butter. Sprinkle with cheese, if you like. Bake at 450°F for 14 to 18 minutes.

  1. These were fantastic. I was out of regular salt so I used garlic salt. I didn't add the honey and I substituted 1/2 the flour with whole wheat flour. They were a lot crispier than yours looked. But we liked them.

  2. I don't know if it was just really humid when I made these or what but 2/3 cup of milk was ENTIRELY too much for the amount of flour and I ended up with a very stick dough that was hard to manage even after I added some flour. I'm getting ready to eat them now so hopefully the taste was worth the hassle of making them.

  3. (same commenter from 3/17/2013) Ok my dad loved the taste and I thought taste wise it was good too but I would add less liquid if I ever did this again.

    1. People... It says to "gradually" add the milk. If you add it all at once, then please expect that your end product has potential to not work.

  8. I added about 1/4 -1/3 cup more flour to make it the right consistency. I added butter & garlic salt on top (no cheese). I baked for 14 min on wax paper, and they were a bit crispier than what's shown in the picture. I also cut the dough into 8 breadsticks instead of 12. I would make them again! The taste is great, though a bit denser than your typical breadstick. Served with spaghetti! :)

  9. CAUTION: this recipe as followed literally makes biscuit sticks. Not a nice olive garden bread stick. This recipe is great for BISCUITS!

  10. I was silly and poured the milk in not gradually and though the dough was sticky it all worked out when I put it on a floured surface and kneaded it a few times. After rolling and cutting them I folded them in half while twisting the pieces around each other. It gave them a fancier appearance once cooked.
